BEYOND THE GARDEN

By Anita Mondragon

Just like a field of flowers,

That’s how my life seemed;

So surreal and pleasant,

Like something from a dream.

Just like a field of flowers,

That’s how my life seemed;

So surreal and pleasant,

Like something from a dream.

Then I heard the Lord say,

“Come!  Let’s take a turn,

There’s some things down this road,

That I think you need to learn.”

At first, the path was easy…

Like a “garden path”, I thought;

But then the way got rocky,

With thorns and thistles, wrought.

I cried, “Oh Lord!  Please help me!

Why’d you make me take that turn?

I just can’t seem to see

What you think I need to learn!”

He said, “There’s strength and growth,

If you’ll continue on your way…

It’s just beyond the garden;

Trust ME, and don’t stray!

I know the way seems hard,

But just trust me!  Take my hand,

And when you reach the end…

Then, I’m sure you’ll understand!

I felt the same way too

In the garden of Gethsemane

When I prayed and asked the Father

To let the cup pass from me.

When I was in the garden,

Down on my knees that day,

I was so full of sorrow,

Not knowing how to pray!

So I said, ‘Dear Father…

Not My will, but Thine…’

For I knew death would come to me,

It was just a matter of time.

I heard Him say, ‘HOLD ON SON!

JUST STAY UPON THE PATH…

FOR IT’S YOUR BLOOD THAT’S NEEDED

TO QUELL MY RIGHTEOUS WRATH!

I KNOW THE CROSS ‘TWIL BE HEAVY,

AND HARD FOR YOU TO BEAR…

AND THOUGH MY BACK IS TURNED,

PLEASE KNOW THAT I’M STILL THERE!’

So I let His will be done,

And I died upon that tree.

I shed my blood, and hung in shame

So that all men could be free!

Yes…there’s beauty in the garden,

And on the mountain top,

But in the valley of sorrow…

That’s where faith is taught!

So linger in the garden…

But don’t fear to go beyond,

For past your sea of trials,

There awaits a glorious dawn!”
