ROMANS 5:12-21 - Adam and Christ - The Two Focal Points of History Pt. 2

1.) THE ENTRANCE OF SIN AND DEATH THROUGH ADAM (ROM. 5:12-14) 2.) THE COUNTERACTION - THE REVERSAL - OF SIN AND DEATH BY CHRIST (ROM. 5:15-18)

a.) Adam’s sin brought death; God’s gift brought righteousness (Rom. 5:15)

1.) God has showered His grace upon man (Eph. 2:4-9; Titus 3:7) 2.) God has made His gift (righteousness) available to man (Rom. 4:24-25; 2 Cor. 5:21; Titus 3:4-6)

b.) Adam’s sin brought condemnation; God’s gift brought justification (Rom. 5:16) (Acts 13:39; Rom. 5:1; Gal. 3:6) c.) Adam’s sin brought the reign of death; God’s gift brought the reign of life (Rom. 5:17)

    1.) Note two glorious truths:

a.) Believers “Reign in life” while on this earth (Jn. 10:10; 2 Cor. 9:8; Eph. 3:20; Phil. 4:19; 2 Pet. 1:11; Ps. 36:8) b.) Believers shall “Reign in life” throughout all eternity (Jn. 3:16, 5:24; Lk. 19:17, 22:28-29; 1 Cor. 6:2-3) d.) Adam’s sin brought condemnation to all men, God’s gift brought justification of life upon all men (Rom. 5:18) (Rom. 6:23, 8:32; 2 Cor. 9:15; Eph. 2:8)

    3.) THE CONCLUSION (ROM. 5:19-21)

a.) Adam’s disobedience made many sinners, but Christ obedience made many righteous (Rom. 5:19) (Heb. 2:10, 5:9, 7:25-26) b.) The law was given to point out and magnify sin, but God’s grace was so much greater (Rom. 5:20) (Rom. 3:20; Gal. 3:19, 24; Eph. 1:7, 2:7; 1 Tim. 1:14-15) c.) Sin reigned to death, but God’s grace reigned to eternal life (Rom. 5:21)

1.) By Adam, sin reigns, - Leads to death (Rom. 5:12; Prov. 11:19; Ezk. 18:4, 18:20) 2.) By God, grace reigns - Leads to eternal life (Jn. 1:4, 11:25-26, 14:6; 2 Tim. 1:10; 1 Jn. 1:2, 5:12) But Note the Source: Eternal life comes only through the righteousness of “Jesus Christ our lord.”

Romans 5:12-21 Adam and Christ - The Two Focal Points of History

1.) THE ENTRANCE OF SIN AND DEATH THROUGH ADAM (ROM. 5:12-14)

    a.) Sin came by one man - Adam (Rom. 5:12) (Gen. 2:17; Ezk. 18:20) b.) Adam’s nature of sin and death passed to all (Rom. 5:12) (Rom. 3:23, 6:23; Gal. 3:22; 1 Jn. 1:8; 1 King 8:46; Ps. 14:3, 53:3; Prov. 20:9; Isa. 53:6, 64:6)

    1.) Sin is the ultimate thing that can be done against God 2.) Sin cost God the ultimate price (Jn. 15:13; Rom. 5:8) (Isa. 53:5, 12; 1 Cor. 15:3; 2 Cor. 2:5, 15; Gal. 1:4; Titus 2:14; Heb. 9:28; 1 Pet. 2:24, 3:18; 1 Jn. 3:5, 16)

c.) The Proof: Sin and death existed before the law (Rom. 5:13) (Gen. 3:19; Job. 21:26; Ps. 49:6-9, 104:29; Eccl. 12:7; Acts 13:36) d.) Adam’s real importance: A type of Christ (Rom. 5:14)(Rom. 5:18-19; 1 Cor. 15:21-22, 45-49) e.) Sin is the cause of death

1.) “The birth of a person, his entrance into the world, is the greatest imaginable blessing. Being born into this depraved and corruptible  world is the only way a person can ever know the love of God and experience eternal life with God.” (Eph. 2:7; Jn. 3:3; 2 Pet. 1:4)
