     ABRAHAM: THE EXAMPLE OF A MAN JUSTIFIED BY FAITH ALONE (PART 2)

    1.) THE SOURCE OF ABRAHAM’S FAITH (ROM. 4:17)        

    a.) It was God Himself (Mk. 11:22; Heb. 11:6) b.) It was God who quickened the dead (Jn. 5:24-25, 6:40; Acts 24:15; 1 Cor. 15:22; 2 Cor. 4:14; 1 Thess. 4:16) c.) It was God who created (Mt. 19:26; Lk. 1:37; Job 42:2)

    2.) THE STRENGTH OF ABRAHAM’S FAITH (ROM. 4:18-22)

    a.) His Faith was in what God had said (Rom. 4:18)

    1.) He was not weak in faith (Rom. 4:19) (Isa. 43:10; Deut. 6:5, 10:12-13) 2.) He was strong in faith (Rom. 4:20) 3.) He was fully convinced (Rom. 4:21) (Lk. 3:8; Acts 27:25; Deut. 7:9; Ps. 37:5; Prov. 3:5; Isa. 26:3; Jer. 17:7)

    a.) That men might read the account (Jn. 20:31; 1 Jn. 1:1-3) b.) That men might be counted righteous - by believing

    1.) That God raised Jesus 2.) That Jesus died for our sins and was raised again for our justification (Acts 2:23-24, 10:39-41, 13:30; Rom. 1:4; Eph. 1:20-21)

    1.) THE UNMISTAKABLE STATEMENT: (ROM. 4:13)      

    a.) The promise (Heb. 11:8-10, 13-14, 16, 13:14;  2 Pet. 3:10-13; Lk. 1:33; Isa. 32:1; Dan. 7:14) (Mt. 5:5; Gal. 3:29; Rom. 4:3, 13)

    2.) THE ARGUMENT AGAINST THE LAW (ROM. 4:14-15)

    Romans 4:9-12 - RITUALS, RULES AND ORDINANCES: “THE WRONG WAY FOR A MAN TO SEEK JUSTIFICATION.”

    1.) WHO RECEIVES THE BLESSING OF FORGIVENESS? (ROM. 4:9) (Rom. 4:6-8) 2.) ABRAHAM WAS COUNTED RIGHTEOUS WHEN HE BELIEVED (ROM. 4:9) (Gal. 3:6; Rom. 4:3; Titus 3:4-5; Heb. 2:4) 3.) ABRAHAM WAS COUNTED RIGHTEOUS BEFORE THE RITUAL  (ROM. 4:10) 4.) ABRAHAM RECEIVED CIRCUMCISION AS A SIGN OR SYMBOL ONLY (ROM. 4:11)

    a.) Circumcision was both a:

    1.) Sign 2.) Seal

    b.) Circumcision and all other rituals are a matter of the heart, not a matter of being spiritually cleansed by physical and material substances (Rom. 2:28-29; Col. 2:11; Deut. 10:16, 30:6) c.) Baptism should be the first step of obedience in the believer’s new life in Christ (Mt. 3:15; Mk. 16:16; Acts 2:38; Col. 2:12)

    5.) ABRAHAM WAS CHOSEN BY GOD FOR A TWOFOLD PURPOSE (ROM. 4:11-12)

    a.) To be the father of all believers (Lk. 5:31-32, 19:10;Rom. 3:23-24) b.) To be the father of the circumcised, “Who follow in the steps of Abraham’s faith.” (Mt. 7:22-23; Rom. 3:20, 10:2-4, 10; Gal. 2:16; Eph. 2:8-9)

    The Great Principle: “The way to God is not through membership of any nation, not through any order or ruling which makes a mark upon a man’s body; but by the faith which takes God at His Word and makes everything dependent solely upon God’s grace.”
